Is there any special preparation required before the test?

- Bring
or wear cool, comfortable clothing and walking shoes that are suitable
for cycling. Ladies avoid skirts or dresses
if possible.
- For those patients who are current smokers, we ask that you refrain from
smoking a minimum of 8 hours prior to your CPX. Smoking prior to your test
may cause you to have falsely poor result.
- Other substances
to avoid on the day of testing are
caffeine (coffee, tea, energy drinks, cola) and alcohol.
- On the day of testing, please refrain from eating a large or heavy meal
in the four hours prior to testing, especially one that contains a high proportion
of carbohydrates (pasta, rice, potatoes etc) or fats, but be sure to have
eaten and hydrated sensibly during the day of the appointment.
- Diabetic patients are also advised to bring 'snacks' to consume after the
test. We also request that diabetic patients bring their blood
sugar testing machine so that blood sugar levels can be tested prior
to exercise.
- Please take all of your prescribed medication as usual. In the event that
your Consultant wishes to make any changes to your medication prior to your
CPX test, your referring medical team will contact you directly.
- You will be sent information regarding your test in the post prior to your
appointment. Please bring all completed forms with
you to your appointment. Please also bring a list of your current medications.
- To enable you to perform to the best of your ability, try to be well rested
on the day of testing.
