My patient suffers from knee and hip orthopaedic problems and
I am concerned that he will not be able to complete the cycling portion
of the test, should I still refer this patient for testing?
We perform
pre-operative screening for a number of patient groups including
those undergoing elective knee and hip surgery. When a clinician
is concerned about a patient’s ability to successfully undergo CPX
testing, our trained staff will contact the patient directly to ascertain
if it is suitable to attempt testing.
Can I refer my NHS patient?
We provide an outsourcing service for
a number of NHS Trusts both on a contractual basis and on an ad hoc
basis. CPX patient funding is organised regularly and is easily arranged.
Please contact us directly and we can guide you through the funding
process.
How much will the test cost?
We have been approved by all of the
major insurance companies, hence depending on the patient’s policy
he/she will be covered. Patients can be referred via the NHS and
the cost per test will be dependant upon whether or not the NHS Trust
has a contract in place with CPX Ltd. We also welcome self- pay and
Embassy patients. Please contact us directly for our current pricing.
How long will it take to get my patient an appointment?
Generally,
depending on the patient’s availability, the patient is usually tested
within 5 workings days of our team receiving a medical request.
When can I expect to have the results back?
While most of the reporting
is completed within 24 hours of the patient’s appointment, please
allow 48 hours for report distribution. If you require an urgent
report please let us know in advance.
Which patient groups do you mainly see in your lab?
We see a mixture
of medical patients, pre-operative patients, and those clients who
wish to undergo health screening. We assess the following groups
on a regular basis:
Are there any patients who are unable to complete
the tests?
In our experience, although rare, there is a very small
percentage of patients who fatigue prior to test completion. When
patients are very frail and/or have pain which limits their cycling
ability, occasionally some patients cannot complete testing. Importantly,
with a skilled assessment and reporting team, we are usually still
able to derive important clinical information from such tests.
How long should my patients allow for the entire testing process?
From the beginning of the test to discharge from the laboratory, patients
should allow a total of 1 hour. All patients will be asked to arrive
approximately 15 minutes prior to appointment commencement time in
order to complete a standard patient clinic registration form.
Are there any contraindications to testing?
Yes, as with
most medical tests there are some absolute contraindications to CPX testing
including:
- Acute Myocardial infarct (within 7-10 days if
transmural / 5 days if uncomplicated)
- Unstable angina (free of angina 4 days prior to CPX)
- Uncontrolled arrhythmia causing symptoms or hemodynamic
compromise (high degree AV block, tachy / bradyarrhythmias)
- Left main stem stenotic lesion in excess of 50%
- Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
- Severe aortic stenosis
- Uncontrolled heart failure
- Malignant hypertension
- Syncope
- Dissecting aneurysm
